How To Grow Plums

Plums are easy to grow but a disease called plum curculio can be a problem as well as birds who love the fruit as much as humans do.

Here are two solutions.

Surroundr at Homer Crop Protectant

Surround does not rely on toxicity--instead, it protects plants with a barrier film listed for use in organic production Surround is the best organic product available to fight hard-to-control pear psylla, plum curculio and Japanese beetles Surround does not affect honeybees, earthworms or beneficial insects. Surround reduces sunburn damage, resulting in higher yield. Surround dries to a powdery film that sticks to insects' wings, legs and mouth parts, so pests quickly leave to find a more comfortable place to feed or lay eggs. Its active ingredient is a specially processed, super-fine kaolin (allowed up to 2.5% in foods.) As an extra benefit, Surround blocks light that causes sunburn, reducing damage by over 50%.

Garden Netting

Shields fruits and vegetables from birds without interfering with plant growth. Drape net over plants as they begin to ripen. Noncollapsing design prevents birds from becoming entangled. Lightweight polypropylene net can be used for years.
